Having settled into our lovely hotel and into the rhythm of daily life, we took a brief stroll around parts of the city to get a sense of where we are and how the layout works. Thrown into this was a promised 'gondola ride' which was actually a trip across the Grand Canal by traghetto, a boat service that used to be completely necessary before there was more than just one bridge across the canal, and before the public transport system came into being.
