WORKING IN THE ART WORLD
![]()
JULY 16 – 30 2012
The Art Market Academy, London, John Hall Venice, Gervasuti Foundation, Venice
Directors Charles Hall Sophie Macpherson
The summer of 2012 sees the launch of The Venice Academy. Created and run by Sophie Macpherson’s Art Market Academy and John Hall Venice in association with the Venetian Gervasuti Foundation, it is an entirely new concept that caters for those interested in working in the art world, whether as employed adults who feel like a change, university students or students between school and university.
The idea? To introduce the internal mechanics of the International Art World through a series of lectures, seminars, studio visits and hands-on experience working with curators and directors at one of the most interesting and forward-looking Art Foundations in the city. With its tradition of contemporary art activities- the Biennale, the Architecture Biennale, the Venice Film Festival, the presence of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection of 20th century Art, and Francois Pinault’s two major collections of contemporary art at the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana and the Prada Foundation, Venice has always been at the cutting edge of the art world. We have brought together a team of international experts who will speak about their specialist subjects and can provide a personal connection to the Art World. For those considering future employment in the field this provides a unique opportunity to meet major players , to refine targets and attend a final seminar with Sophie Macpherson’s art world recruitment agency . Students will have the opportunity to develop CVs and resumes over the two-week period in direct one-on-one consultations with Sophie Macpherson herself.
Venice in the summer is hot and wonderful. All lectures take place in air-conditioned rooms. Added to the impressive list of lectures there will be a comprehensive introduction to Venetian art given by Charles Hall, Director of the Academy, that includes a private night-time visit to the Basilica of Saint Mark and tours of many of the great churches and galleries of Venice, to see paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Carpaccio, Tintoretto, Veronese and Tiepolo amongst others.
There will be the option to take a short three- session course in Italian cookery that takes place in the evenings in a historic palazzo on the Lido with an internationally renowned English-speaking cook and to take four drawing and painting classes given by Tom Young, landscape artist.
As 2012 is the year of Venice's Architecture Biennale there will be particular focus on that subject, with visits to pavilions that will be setting up for the opening in September.
